General Feedback

  1. Really engaging game! I don’t have a lot of experience with tarot, but I’ve been wanting to get back into it a bit. This is just what I was looking for. Thank you so much!
  2. The rulebook gives some example interpretation of cards. Those were very helpful.
  3. I had a little trouble figuring out where/when to set the tryst. There are so many options. It worked out great, but maybe you would want to add a step to help define the setting?
  4. The rules call the player character the ‘player’. Maybe I’m being nitpicky, but it’s important to me to distinguish between myself and a character I’m playing. It feels weird to blur that line (so, I mostly thought of my character as ‘the mortal’). But maybe you were aiming for that kind of bleedover? If that was the goal, then maybe the rulebook should specify that for the player? Just a thought.

Notes on my playthrough

For this playthrough, I used The Mythic tarot by Juliet Sharman-Burke, Jiz Greene, and Tricia Newell. The deck draws on Greco-Roman myth. It seemed appropriate, and it was all I had.

Also, I removed the spicier bits of the story.

The Goddess - Goddess Cards

1) The Hanged Man (How She carries herself)

- Mythic tarot depicts the card as Prometheus being feasted upon by the eagle

- To me, the card means foresight, dread, and enduring suffering. A great sacrifice for a good cause.

- Prometheus is shown at peace despite it all, so maybe the Goddess carries Herself with a sort of dissonant serenity, no matter the situation

2) King of Wands (How She relates to others)

- Mythic Tarot depicts the card as King Theseus, ruling Athens in triumph after his adventures

- To me, the card means ambition and daring (like Theseus going on adventures) but is more about taking control, commanding like a king

- So… I’m pretty sure the Goddess is a domme. 😉

3) Ace of Cups (What desire She seeks)

- Mythic Tarot depicts the card as aphrodite, emerging from the foam

- To me, the card means an outpouring of raw feelings, a new glorious start

- I think the Goddess likes to guide people who are first starting out or at the beginning of something. She goes to people with a lot of feelings but little knowledge.

Interpretation

  • What do they say about your Goddess?
    • The Goddess is a moment of calm in a crisis. She walks into chaos and takes control, demanding much but leading to even greater rewards.
  • What are Her needs?
    • To the extent She needs anything, I think She needs clay to mold or a crisis to resolve.
  • What is at the heart of Her desires, if any?
    • She desires raw enthusiasm. People who are just starting out, but have great passion.

Player’s Note: I struggled a bit with this first step, but I think I was just out of practice with reading tarot. The further I got into the game, the more comfortable I felt.

Also, I went back and tweaked the Goddess’s description a bit. She was originally a bit more cruel, but I wanted to put Her in a more positive light. Would you want to include advice on when/if a player should go back and reinterpret a card?

The Player - Temperament Card

Five of Wands

- Note: The same suit as the Goddess’s King of Wands

- Mythic Tarot depicts the card as Jason and Medea battling the dragon that guards the golden fleece

- The card makes me think of struggling with an outside threat or challenge, but I’m drawn to Jason and Medea’s relationship. Their story doesn’t end well for either of them, and their relationship to each other is ultimately the greater threat than the dragon.

- I want to read this as an internal struggle between some inner ‘man’ and an inner woman. This is a Medea stan-account (yes, I know she kills her brother and does other terrible stuff, but she’s still so cool!), so I’m rooting for her.

Interpretation

  • The mortal character is a college student who is a repressed trans woman. She’s working on a big project, but her greater struggle is to come to terms with her gender and her desires.

Player’s Note: I struggled a bit with this step because I wasn’t sure whether to set the story in the modern day or in some more fantastical setting (maybe with a more literal dragonslayer). A Goddess could appear in any time or place, but humans are a lot more limited by our circumstances. To be clear, PC creation turned out great in the end. There was just a difficult moment where I tried to figure out where/when to set the story.

Would you want to add a step where the player defines the setting before they create the player character?

Also, um, sorry if the mortal’s concept hits close to home with anyone or is in bad taste. I’m trying to make sense of my own situation, and this is what came up for me.

Building your encounter

Initial Meeting

The Goddess doesn’t seem like the type to be stumbled upon. She seems more likely to purposefully enter a situation and take charge. The initial meeting is in the mortal’s dorm showers. The mortal was up very late working on the project, so she’s the only one in the room. As she showers, her mind starts to wander, and she’s too tired to stop herself from thinking about what she really wants.

Enter: the Goddess. She’s come to crack this poor egg’s shell with divine revelation (and sexy times).

Player’s Note: This isn’t wish-fulfillment! You’re wish-fulfillment!!!

More seriously, this step worked pretty well for me. I felt like I had a good understanding of the Goddess and the mortal, so it seemed natural that they’d meet in a situation like this.

Encounter Card

The Lovers

- The Mythic Tarot depicts the card as the Judgment of Paris (making it incredibly appropriate for a mortal encountering the divine)

- To me, the key elements of the card are Paris looking for beauty, finding it, and succumbing to his desire. Acting on feelings with no thought of the consequences

Interpretation

As is Her wont, the Goddess moves in and takes command. Already naked, She enters the shower stall, and before the mortal can cry out in alarm, the Goddess silences her with a finger to her lips. Panic quickly turns to desire as the mortal beholds divine glory. The Goddess looks upon the mortal and finds (less spectactural, but still very real) beauty there too.

They act on their feelings.

Player’s Note: I might have rushed the initial meeting. I know they leaped straight into sex, but it felt right at the time.

Event Card #02

Knight of Swords

- The Mythic Tarot depicts this as Castor and Pollux

- This speaks to me about courage, some beneficial impulsiveness, and a bit of domination

Interpretation

The Goddess does a bit of domination. For her part, the mortal musters the courage to act on some desires she’s had for a while. The mortal bottoms for some sex. Then they go back to the mortal’s room and talk. The mortal shares what she wants and what she fears. The Goddess gives guidance. She summons up a dress and cosmetics for the mortal

Players Notes: I know women don’t have to be subs or bottom during sex or wear dresses or anything. But this particular PC wants to, so she does (with some divine help).

Event Card #03 - Discard 01

Two of Wands

- The Mythic Tarot depicts this card as a young Jason preparing to start his adventure

- Jason previously appeared in the Temperament card (which I read as a conflict between Jason and Medea).

- This card could definitely be read as the mortal learning from her experience and starting a new chapter of her life, but I like Medea, and I didn’t want Jason to get the metaphorical last word in

Interpretation

The mortal has a moment of panic, and she thinks about the life she was ‘supposed’ to live. She thinks about living as ‘Jason’ and what that would mean. She rejects that path because she knows it would ultimately end badly for everyone.

Event Card #04

The Hermit

- The Mythic Tarot depicts this as Cronus

- The cards means going off alone, gaining wisdom, and (because of Cronus) the end of an era

Interpretation

Mortal takes some time to think about all she’s learned. The Goddess gives her that space and silence. I think, in a way, this is the first time the Goddess has really relaxed during the tryst. She shows up and takes control and changes things, but only when She’s done Her part can She really relax and open Herself up to a quiet intimacy with Her partner. After a while, they go to sleep together, and the mortal awakens alone.

Ending the Tryst

  • What needs and desires did the Player and the Goddess seek out at the start, and were they successfully met at the end?
    • The PC was absolutely successful. I don’t think the Goddess ever truly succeeds, because, for Her, there’s always the next crisis to resolve.
  • How did this encounter impact the Player? Did it change her? What about the Goddess?
    • The mortal changed for sure. I don’t think the Goddess changed.
  • How would the Player describe her encounter to herself afterward? What about the Goddess?
    • The mortal tells herself it was all just a dream, but she knows it was a miracle.
    • The Goddess rarely thinks back to this. It was just another adventure, and there are always more of those for Her.
